Notification history on Huawei and Honor phones

Honor phones have notification history in Settings; most Huawei phones don't. Where to find it on MagicOS, why EMUI and HarmonyOS lack it, and what to do instead.

The short answer: On an Honor phone, open Settings → Notifications → Notification history and switch it on. On most Huawei phones (EMUI and HarmonyOS) there is no notification history screen at all. You can’t switch it on because it isn’t there.

Huawei and Honor are often grouped together, but since Honor became a separate company in 2020 their phones run different software. For notification history that difference decides everything.

Honor (MagicOS)

Honor phones run MagicOS, which is built on current Android with Google services. They include Android’s notification history screen:

Settings → Notifications → Notification history → turn on Use notification history.

On some models and versions the menu is called Notifications & status bar. If you can’t see it, type history into the Settings search box.

Once it’s on, it works like the standard Android feature:

  • It starts empty and records nothing from before you turned it on.
  • It keeps about 24 hours, with no option to keep more.
  • Text only: photos aren’t saved.
  • One list across all apps, with the ones you dismissed listed below the recent ones.

There’s more on the standard feature in how to see notification history on Android.

Huawei (EMUI and HarmonyOS)

Most Huawei phones don’t have notification history, and no setting or code adds it.

Android added the history screen in version 11. Huawei’s EMUI and HarmonyOS had already split away from Google’s Android updates by then, so the feature never arrived. Huawei’s own help pages describe the notification panel and how to clear it, but no history.

What you can still try:

  • Look in the app itself. Most messaging apps keep the message in the chat even after you clear its notification. The notification only matters when the message was deleted.
  • Older EMUI phones (Android 10 and earlier): on some builds, adding a Settings shortcut widget to the home screen offers a Notification log option. It’s a raw system log and it isn’t on every build, but it’s worth a look.

Keeping notifications for longer

A notification saver uses the notification access permission to write each notification down as it arrives, so it doesn’t need the system history screen.

NotiWeave saves notifications from the apps you choose and groups them into one thread per sender. Photos stay in the thread, and nothing ages out after a day.

In the appThreads → app → sender

One sender, one thread, in date order, kept for as long as you want rather than for a day.

Which phones it works on:

  • Honor phones: yes. Install it from Google Play like any other app.
  • Huawei phones with Google Play (generally models released before mid-2019): yes.
  • Newer Huawei phones without Google Play: NotiWeave is only distributed through Google Play, so these phones can’t install it.
  • HarmonyOS NEXT (HarmonyOS 5 and later on recent models) doesn’t run Android apps at all.

Two honest limits: no app can save what arrived before it was set up, and everything NotiWeave saves stays on your phone, as the privacy policy explains.

Common questions

Does Huawei have notification history?

Not on most models. EMUI and HarmonyOS don’t include the screen Android added in version 11.

How do I check notification history on an Honor phone?

Settings → Notifications → Notification history, then switch it on. Search Settings for “history” if the menu is named differently.

Is Honor the same as Huawei for this?

No. Honor phones run MagicOS on current Android and have notification history. Huawei phones mostly don’t.

Can I recover a cleared notification on Huawei?

Not from the system, because nothing records it. A notification saver only helps with notifications that arrive after you install it.

Why can’t I find notification history after a HarmonyOS update?

It wasn’t removed. HarmonyOS never included it.

On an Honor phone, turn notification history on today. On a Huawei, check whether your phone has Google Play. If it does, a notification saver is your notification history.
